Dr. Kimberly Brodie Harlan, PhD

Bio

As the founder of Awakenings Counseling Center, Dr. Kimberly Brodie Harlan brings over 28 years of administrative and clinical experience developing innovative treatment programs for High Stress Systems, Compassion Fatigue, Chemical Dependency, Trauma, Addictions and Codependency. Dr. Harlan has served as Executive Director of day support programs, outpatient programs, and private practices and is known for her direct compassionate style of treatment expressed through her creative approach to treatment, thinking outside the box and use of experiential and gestalt techniques.

Dr. Harlan was trained by Francine Shapiro in EMDR in 1995. She has also received her hypnosis and biofeedback training at the Menninger Foundation and is a Certified Clinical Hypnotherapist. Dr. Harlan is also a Distance Credentialed Counselor, treating clients through Therapeutic Email, Phone Therapy, and Video-Chat. As a pioneering force in the field of trauma and addictions Dr. Harlan approaches each client’s needs creatively and with enthusiasm, working to develop a plan of action that will best meet the request of the individual, bringing forth their inner strength and helping them to be who they were always meant to be. Dr. Harlan encourages each individual to work toward their definition of inner balance and healing mentally, emotionally, physically and spiritually.

Dr. Harlan has lectured nationally on Compassion Fatigue, Institutional Compassion Fatigue, Trauma, High Stress Systems, and Secondary Traumatic Stress. In 1994, Dr. Harlan was invited by the International Counsel of Christian Churches to lecture in Rome, Italy on “The Effects of Trauma: Living in the Present with a Past Reality.” As a Certified Compassion Fatigue Specialist, Certified Traumatologist and Certified Addiction Specialist, Dr. Harlan has appeared on television and radio to share about the devastating effects Compassion Fatigue, Trauma, Post Traumatic Stress, Secondary Traumatic Stress and Addictions can have on individuals, families and anyone in a helper role. Dr. Harlan also provides lectures on other topics such as Stress Reduction, Assertiveness Training, Managing Anger, Conflict Resolution, Shame, Chemical Dependency, Depression, Military Families, Anxiety, Fear and Effective Communication.

As a Research Scientist, Dr. Harlan has completed research on Compassion Fatigue and in other areas. In 2003, Dr. Harlan was invited by Dr. Charles Figley, to assist him and the New York Academy of Medicine on research surrounding the Compassion Fatigue, Social Workers and 9/11. Dr. Figley is world renowned for his work in Compassion Fatigue and Post Traumatic Stress Disorder.

Dr. Harlan has the ability to communicate flexibly on complex topics. As a published author in both professional and layman publications, Dr. Harlan developed a well-received women’s column called “WomenKind”. She has also published many articles on a variety of topics such as self-esteem, women’s issues, empowerment, recovery issues, parenting, relationships and compassion fatigue.
