Dr. Karen Simmons-Faber

Bio

Dr. Karen Simmons-Faber has been a practicing licensed clinical psychologist for 20 years. During this time, her professional focus has largely been within the private practice setting. She has worked for 6 years at Awakenings Counseling Center, in Virginia Beach, where she provides services to clients who are addressing a wide variety of issues, including depression and anxiety, grief, trauma, eating disorders, and aging-related issues. Three years ago, she concurrently accepted a position at The Deployment Health Center at Oceana in Virginia Beach, where she treated Sailors and Marines returning from Afghanistan and Iraq.

Dr. Simmons-Faber utilizes her educational background and years of practice wisdom to develop a specialized treatment plan to fit the needs of each individual. Her approach to client care is characterized by Dr. Simmons-Faber’s authentic, compassionate and understanding style. Dr. Simmons-Faber genuine approach enables her to builds rapport very quickly with her clients, putting them at ease to share their needs.

In February 2012, Dr. Simmons-Faber furthered her contribution to the treatment and support of the military when she accepted a position as the lead mental health provider and supervisor at Little Creek Amphibious Base in Virginia Beach. Here she is responsible for contributing to the development of a mental health program that supports Service Members who specialize in the handling of explosive devices. Additional job responsibilities include maintaining a caseload, administrative responsibilities, and supervision of other clinicians.

Dr. Simmons-Faber has also specialized in the provision of psychological services to the elderly. She functioned as the Regional Clinical Director for a company that provided psychotherapeutic support to residents of assisted-living facilities and nursing homes. In this role she supervised other psychotherapists who provided services to the resident senior population, and developed and implemented in-services for staff, conducted quality assurance visits, and provided marketing services.

Additional professional endeavors have included teaching Psychology courses at a community college, and freelance writing on current psychological topics for an on-line media website, called gohamptonroads.com.

Dr. Simmons-Faber received her bachelor’s degree from the State University of New York at Binghamton in 1981 and her Ph.D. in clinical psychology from Florida State University in 1992.
